In the nineteenth century English public schools were seen to incorporate contemporary football codes into their own football. The expansion of the British Empire spread these rules of football to areas under British influence outside the directly controlled empire. By the end of the nineteenth century, distinct regional codes were already evolving: Gaelic football, for example, deliberately incorporated the rules of the local traditional football game to preserve their heritage. The Football League was founded in England in 18, the first of all professional football competitions. In the middle of the twentieth century, different types of football became popular all over the world.
