We have all read Kazi Nazrul Islam's Sankalp Kavita. There's a line,
“What a heroic diver
The Indus brings pearls. "
Whether you bring pearls in the Indus or not, you can't believe how much a diver suffers and how much he sacrifices.
It is usually not seen below 20/30 meters without any help under water. Up to this point, almost everything can be seen. The light of seven colors enters the water, but after a while the light is lost one by one. Finally, the purple light disappears after 200 meters. Then the light is dark. And after about 1000 meters or 3260 feet, the bottom of the water becomes completely dark. Shunshan silence all around.
And if someone goes down more than 200 meters or 600 feet without a watercraft, he may die under the pressure of the water.
Divers continue to work every day with many such problems.
How do divers breathe underwater? We often see on TV how divers jump into the water with the back of the oxygen cylinder. But, what did divers do before the discovery of this oxygen tank? The question may come.
In the past, "diving bells" were used as an alternative to oxygen tanks.
Before entering the water, the bell was turned upside down and the open side was lowered steeply into the water. Under the pressure of the water, the wind would get stuck in that bell. The diver would dive into the bell, take in some oxygen from there, take a deep breath, swim, do some work, come back into the bell after a while, breathe in again, and exit again. It continued like this.
More than one person could use this bell together. It was used only the day before, but it is not. It is still being used. However, with the advancement of technology, its size has changed.
And now the most used is the oxygen cylinder or oxygen tank. It is a mixture of oxygen and helium in a special process.
At the beginning of cylinder circulation, nitrogen dissolved cylinders with oxygen were used. The problem with this is that the nitrogen gets into the divers' blood due to the extra pressure of the water. After rising again, nitrogen is released from the blood as the pressure decreases. In both cases there is a sharp pain in the divers. This pain is called bend.
To solve this problem, a mixture of oxygen and helium is used. This mixture is now called Heliox.
A deep sea diver has to carry some essentials.
- An air pump that helps the diver get under the water
- A helmet with glasses for underwater viewing
- Waterproof clothing that can be attached to the hands and ankles
- A shoe that helps to stand under water
- A lifeline through which to communicate with people on land or on ships
Water pressure is a huge problem for divers in the abyss. The deeper the dive sinks, the higher the water pressure around it. So, the system of pumping air downwards helps him to breathe properly and maintain the balance of water pressure.
Divers do a lot of important work. Their importance in the search for drowned people is immense. They study the life of plants and animals under water. Their help in building bridges over water is essential.
