The world's largest cemetery The world's largest cemetery is located in the Iraqi city of Najaf, also known as the Valley of Peace, also known as the Valley of Peace. Najaf is one of the largest cities in Iraq and has the status of a holy city. This cemetery has been in use for the last fourteen hundred years and its traditions are even older. As well as being the largest cemetery in the world, it is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Wadi al-Salam cemetery covers an area of 1,485.5 acres, more than six kilometers, and contains more than five million graves. Millions of people come here every year. The cemetery contains the graves of mostly Shia Muslims and martyrs of the State Wars. About 150 to 200 bodies are buried in the cemetery every day. There are underground cellars for burying the dead in Wadi-ul-Salam. These cellars have the capacity to bury more or less 50 corpses in underground blocks. Famous kings, princes and sultans are buried in Wadi-ul-Salam cemetery. Besides, the tombs of Hazrat Hood (as), Hazrat Saleh (as) and Hazrat Ali Ibn Abi Talib (as) are also here. Plasters and bricks are used in the construction of graves and tombs here. The underground basement blocks in the cemetery are in a state of disrepair. During the war, local militias set up bases in these underground passages and continued to resist American forces through guerrilla warfare. Insurgent groups also used underground passages for their operations. The Iraqi army has bulldozed basement passages in several places in the cemetery. The cemetery was further expanded in 2003.
