Labor Day is a holiday worth celebrating for. And yes, we celebrate it to give honor, praise, and gratitude to the workers around the world, but in this short writing, yes, I am referring to all the hard-working men and women of the American workforce.
But what is it about the labor day, anyway? Many people, including the Americans themselves, don't have any idea about the origin of this particular day. What type of holiday is it? Who and what should we honor and recognize in the United States of America on this day? What are the public gatherings for? Why is shopping even on the picture? Here are some fun and interesting facts about the Labor Day in the USA:
In 1887, Oregon was the first state in the U.S. that made it an official public holiday.
In 1894, the U.S. Congress passed a bill recognizing the first Monday of September as Labor Day and made it an official federal holiday.
"Labor Day" was promoted by the Central Labor Union and the Knights of Labor, which organized the first parade in New York City.
As late as the 1930's, unions were encouraging workers to strike to make sure they got the day off.
The city of New York offers the Labor Day carnival, and fireworks over Coney Island. In Washington, the National Symphony Orchestra perform a Labor Day concert at the U.S. Capitol for free.
Labor Day has become an important weekend in the U.S. for discounts by many retailers, especially for back to school sales.
Labor Day is called the "unofficial end of summer" because it marks the end of the cultural summer season.
