Cell naming: Robert Hooke (1635-1703) was hired by the Royal Society of London in 175 to be the custodian of machinery. He wondered if something could be done with a microscope. He saw a wooden cork solid but floating in the water, what is the reason? He made a thin section of the stopper and observed it under a microscope. There he saw innumerable little cells like litter boxes. Then he remembered that he had seen six such cells for the stay of monks oru priests in the ashram. From this he named the little box of the cork Cell or Cell. Origin of the word Cell from the Latin Cellula which means small cell. He published his observations in Micrographia. The six cells built for the inmates in the jail are also called cells. Most cells are microscopic, invisible to the naked eye. However, some exceptions can be noticed. Bird eggs consist of a single cell. Duck - Chicken eggs can be seen with the naked eye. The ostrich egg is the largest cell (17 cm x 12.5 cm). Cotton or jute fiber, palm fiber is quite long, can be seen with the naked eye. Human neuron cells are about 1.37 meters long. The Bengali synonym of cell is cell. Robert Hooke actually saw only dead cells.
