It can be annoying to learn that events from the past are still having an impact on you. I thought I was over it, you might think or I thought I'd had enough of it.
Our trauma from the past can have a long-term effect on us. At times it may seem as if we’ll never recover from it. A lot of us are afraid to talk about it or even come to terms with it. So we just bury it deep inside us and pretend like nothing is wrong. The reality is, it’s totally okay to find it difficult to move on from the troubles of the past. It’s a journey and you can take it as slow as you want.
How to Move On
As I said previously, healing and moving on from the past is a journey that will take time. But you should have a strong will to move forward. Here are some tips to help you:
Surround yourself by supportive people. It is very helpful to have people around you who will support you all the way while you’re healing. If you’re finding it hard to find support from your family and friends, there are online communities of people who might share the same experiences as you and talking to them may ease your journey.
Go easy on yourself. Whatever you’re feeling is valid. Allow yourself to feel things and never invalidate those feelings.
Get professional help. A lot of us are afraid of seeking professional help because of the stigma behind it. But it is completely normal to want professional help. You can find a suitable therapist or start off by calling a trauma hotline.
Spend time doing things that make you happy. Doing things you’re passionate about helps guide you to move forward when you’re stuck in the past. Immersing yourself in what makes you happy will make you focus on the present.
