Rice fields are land that is tilled and irrigated for planting rice. For this purpose, rice fields must be able to support standing water because rice requires submergence at certain periods of growth. To irrigate the fields, irrigation systems from rivers or rainwater are used. The latter is known as a rain-fed rice field, while the others are irrigated rice fields. Rice planted in paddy fields is known as wetland rice.

Rice fields are one of the main sources of atmospheric methane emissions and are estimated to emit between 50 to 100 million tons of methane gas per year. A study shows that temporarily drying up rice fields while aerating the soil is beneficial to disrupt methane gas emissions and also increase rice yields.
