Just wanna share the essay that I wrote for our "Empowering Technologies". So we are asked to write about us being DIGITAL NATIVES and how technologies helped us today.
This people's generation is called "Digital Natives". Technologies are already very familiar to us because we've grown with them. Technologies are very useful, it makes some of our tasks become easier and makes us become efficient. But it has also bad effects depends on how it is being used. And seems like some people, specially the young ones cannot live without technologies around them.
Instead of writing a letter to bedelivered to a particular person which may take a couple of weeks or months before they can receive it now we open our social media accounts to communicate or do video call to the people we love. And instead of going to library to find a book that has the answer of our homework, we automatically grab our phones or go to internet cafe to search the information we need.
Doing a research is systematic investigation in the field of knowledge and the information that we need is more likely already in the internet. It
is just a matter of how to look for it and how to use information from the most reliable source.
In this lesson I've learned the importance of five online research tips that I must remember and apply to myself.
First, we'll have a question in mind and we must focus in finding the answer of that question. Researching online has so many distractions, specially if we discover new things while searching, that gets our attention even if it is not related to the answer we are searching for, so we must focus in finding the answer.
Second, narrow it down. Search engines like Google, Bing or Yahoo uses several filters to determine the most appropriate result for us. These search engines use our previous search history and geographical location then, send to us the result which is most related to the information we needed.
Third, advanced search. This is the best way to filter information we get from search engines allowing us to filter out information we do not need. Sometimes in doing our research there are some results that are not related that can lead us to misinformation to what we really search for, we must filter those results out.
Four, look for a realible source. We should look for a reliable source because research will be useless if the source we used in acquiring information are incorrect and uncertain.
Five, give credit. If we are going to use the information from a source for educational purposes, give credit to the original author of the page or information, this is to avoid plagiarism issues. Include the link of the website if you are doing a thesis as to where you based your statements. Make sure to input if its based on experiment or facts.
Internet is powerful tool. It gives wonders to us that makes everything way easier. It is used to promote business, gain new friends, and stay in touch. It is also a source of entertainment through games, online communities, and everything in between. Through internet, we can also gain knowledge and discover new things valuable for our day to day life. Be it simple life hacks, home improvement, how-to details and the likes.
