As a high school junior, I had the tiniest idea of what I wanted to do with my life. I knew it was either going to be journalism or becoming a vet. Two years later, as a freshly graduated senior, I didn't have any idea what on earth I wanted to do with my life.
I was really stressed out because finding employment relies so heavily on having experience under your belt. And as an 18-year-old who doesn't even know what they want from their life yet, that's quite hard to come by.
I'm thinking of giving up. My grades are good enough for me to eventually get a degree, but I feel like I'm going to regret not doing something else with my life.
Give Up Now Or Give Up Later?
If you're still in high school and do not know what you want to do with your life, that's ok. In fact, it's expected. However, it is important to start thinking about what you want out of life. Talking about it with friends and family is a good way to get an idea of the different possibilities.
When I was a senior in high school and was having doubts about my future career path, I started asking around. Friends of mine already started figuring out what they wanted to do after graduation. One friend had decided to become a Navy doctor and another one was going into law enforcement right after high school graduation.
There are a lot of different fields. You just need to pick one and stick to it.
At the end of high school, there are three important questions you need to ask yourself before you make any career decisions:
What do I want to do with my life? Why do I want it? What is my purpose in life?
What Do You Want To Do With Your Life?
Many people have different reasons for what they want to be doing in the future. You can change your mind about why you want your career path later on. However, if you start thinking about this now, it will help narrow down the possibilities.
Why do I want it?
Sometimes decisions you made in life are not subjected to what you think, but to what others influenced you with. It is made not to provide self-satisfaction but to give contentment to others. Most of the time, these people are rather close friends or direct loved ones. The sad part about it is that we as decision-maker, were supposed to look into ideas or suggestions that we believe could land up to great answers, but most of the time, their cards were always dealt on the table and not ours. Once you have the courage to decide and think outside the box on your own, and not rely on the influence of others, that's the time that you could say that what you will be doing or have done is something that you really, really, want.
What is my purpose in life?
Every year, more and more people are experiencing mid-life crises. And every year, the younger it is that people experienced it. The words "snowflake", "bitter" or even "infant" are common terms used to describe this kind of attitude. Wherein a little bit of hardship, pain, suffering experienced by these people, could make them bent their knees quicker than instant ramen gets cooked. Many in this life (especially right now), are commonly asking this question: What is my purpose in life? Do I have to continue life as it is or do I have to quit and do a 180-degree turn on this?
Many things in this world could make us stop, focus and think of many ways to solve whatever it is that's in front of us, wherein the end the real solution lies in what we have behind us, our experiences, true people we could rely on, and a God so big that all we need to do is to stop and pray and let our faith do the talking in finding the perfect solution for every problem that makes us think to quit.
"No matter how big your problem is, there's a bigger solution for that"
