Jains were obliged to follow four basic
tenets. These were-
a) Not killing of animals.
B) Speaking no lies.
C) Not taking others' goods forcibly.
D) Not making any properties for own consumption.
Parshanath had asked people to lead a life according to these tenets. The set of these four tenets is known as Chaturyama. Mahavira added yet another tenet to these four. He said that Jains should also follow Brahmacharya or celibacy. These five tenets together constitute what is known as Panchamahavrata.
