The Doctrines of Jainism consisted of the following:

a. Not to commit violence

b. Not to speak a lie

C. Not to steal

d. Not to acquire property. It is said that the fifth doctrine, that is to say, brahmacharya, was included by Mahavira.

Jainism strove (aimed) for freedom from worldly bonds. This be obtained through a. Full knowledge b. Action and c. Liberation. These three are considered as Triratna (three gems). In course of time the Jainas came to be divided into two sects : Svetambaras and Digambaras. Mahavira wanted his followers to remain free from fetters. Even to remain naked lest any attraction to clothes developed. Thus the Jainas initially remained digambaras. Later on, a section of the Jainas adopted the practice of wearing white clothes, and thus came to be known as svetambaras. Jaina Agam and Chaturveda are the religious texts of the svetambara and digambara Jainas respectively.
