The first sermon of Gautama Buddha

Siddhartha was meditating under a Pipal tree in a place near Gaya. It was here that he had attained his Bodhi or wisdom and therefore this tree is known as Bodhivriksha. From Gaya Gautama Buddha had travelled to Sarnath near Varanasi. There for the first time he preached his sermons to his five companions. These five were his first five disciples. To them he had explained the causes of misery in human life. Later, this incident is known as Dharmachakra Pravartana.
