The ruins of the ancient Buddhist vihara, Raktamristika (or Rangamati), were excavated at Rajbaridanga near Chiruti (present Kamasuvama) railway station of Murshidabad. The Chinese traveller Xuanzang (or Hiuen Tsang) had referred to this vihara in his account. Close to it was Karnasuvarna, the capital of Gauda kingdom, In the Chinese language this vihara was called Lo to-mo-chi. Xuanzang came from Tamralipta (present Tamluk) Kamasuvarna was locally known as the palace of king Kama.

To Xuanzang, the place was densely populated and the people were extremely prosperous. The land was low-lying and moist. Cultivation was done regularly. There were flowers and fruits in abundance. The weather was temperate. The people were of good nature and patronized education and culture. Both the communities, the Buddhists and the Shaivas, lived in Karnasuvama. Kamasuvarna was an important centre for commerce and administration, Essential goods were brought from the neighbouring villages for the daily use of the citizens. Probably, well before the reign of Sasanka, trade and commerce existed between this region and South East Asia. There is evidence that a merchant of Raktamritrika had voyaged to Malay in South East Asia for trade. This gives an indication of the economic prosperity of Karasuvarna There has been frequent change in the political scenario of Kamasuvama. After the death of Sasanka, the city was occupied by King Bhaskarvarman of Kamarupa for a brief period. Later on it became the capital city of Jayanaga for some time. But since the A.D.7th century not much is known about this city. Historical sources of the Pala and Sena Age give no reference about it.
