The people of Harappa knew how to write. Their script has been discovered. However the problem is, till date, no one has been able to decipher the script. People have been making partial inferences. The script is symbolic. It has about 375 to 400 basic symbols. However there were no alphabets. The script used to be written from right to left . Small symbols in the script perhaps imply numbers. It is thought that the Dravidian languages shared some similarity with Harappan language. Dravidian influence is noticeable in the language of the Rig Veda as well. Harappan scripts have been found on utensil, seals, copper plates etc. From the Dholavira site, script written in a particular order on a 'signboard' has been discovered. The Harappan script testifies the advancement of the civilization. If and when this script is deciphered, much of the yet unknown history of the Indian subcontinent may come to light.
