Interesting facts about the Satavahanas in the Southern India

After the Mauryas, the Satavanahanas had come to rule over the Deccan and South India. At that time, the Shakas were powerful in north-west Deccan and in Gujarat. The rule of the Satavahanas in southern India had begun in the second half of the 1st century A.D. Their rule Calle to an end in 225 A.D. The influence of the Shaka-Kshatrapa rulers had extended from Ujjayini to Gujarat and Kathiawad. Political and economic factors were responsible for the rift between the Shakas and the Satavahanas. Both powers wished to establish control over certain specified areas. One such area was eastern and western Malwa. In the Kosha region of eastern Malwa, there was a diamond mine. Maritime commerce through western Malwa and the flourishing Indo-Roman trade of the west coast attracted both powers. It was over the issue of control over these regions, that the Shakas and the Satavahanas fought against each other. In time, the Satavahana rule in South India came to an end. A number of small kingdoms then took its place.
