ASUU Strike Recent Updates
I want to officially tell everyone on readcash Happy New Year, welcome to 2022.
I've been a little busy since so as soon as I got this little chance I decided to write on this trending topic and what it means for the students involved.
A while back during December 2021, I posted some articles on ASUU strike. This is like a continuation on the latest updates. For those interested and that hasn't read the article before, you can use the links below.

Moving on...
So the new year has just begun, but the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) are still in a tug of war concerning unfulfilled promises.
There has been an update to the story as the Academic Union has said that the ₦30 billion revitalization funds and the ₦22.5 billion earned allowances given by the government is nowhere near what they are looking for and will not be enough to deal with the challenges facing the university system.
ASUU president, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke while speaking at an interview said that there was still a possibility that the Union went on strike if the government does not fulfill the 2009 agreement and other demands being made.
The Federal Government said that they had released ₦52.5 billion, they gave ₦30 billion for the revitalization funds and ₦2.5 billion for the earned allowances and also said that they are making progress as they try to implement the memorandum of agreement and understanding the government reached with the Academic Union.
ASUU on the other hand, have described the money given by the Federal Government as merely a token payment, and has stated that the money was nowhere near enough to persuade the lecturers from not going on strike soon.
Osodeke demanded that the government address the issues concerning the integrated payroll and personnel information system so as to increase effectiveness of payment to the lecturers and other staff members. He also said the urgent need of renegotiation and resuscitation of universities had not yet been addressed.
This is what our political class is doing. They believe that once they throw a little money, everybody will run back. That is the problem. So, it is not about the token they have given. There are more fundamental issues.
In light of this recent development, there have been mixed reactions from different people with different views.
Many have appealed to the Federal Government and ASUU that they should let the feet of the students and their parents guide their decisions as they try to resolve the lingering issues between them, while some have clearly stated that ASUU has no justification and right to go on any form of strike and that the Federal Government has addressed most of the issues raised by the Academic Union.
All this does is leave we the students in a confused state. Most Universities ( for example mine:- Federal University Of Petroleum Resources Effurun) has already released the time table. According to the school curriculum and the time table, lectures resumes tomorrow. If students travel to school grounds before ASUU finally decides to start the strike, it'll be detrimental and will obviously lead to some loses.
Hopefully in the coming weeks, both parties will be able to come together and finally find a lasting solution to this lingering issue once and for all.
