2022- Paris has fallen….The making?
Sequel to 2013 Olympus has fallen and 2016 London has fallen, we just might be witnessing the making of yet another blockbuster. On the contrary, the first 2 were thrilling and action packed but this is more of a horror sight for the Parisians being the main characters, disappointment for the fans and viewers and an advantage for the enemies. Okay, what am I really talking about here; what’s happening in Paris?, are we discussing movies?…The beautiful city of light is actually as magnificent as ever and we aren’t talking movies. Actually, this one is for football lovers. The footballing pride of the capital of France (Paris Saint Germain) is in turmoil. One that no one definitely saw coming. It’s been a tough season so far for them and no one can really pin point where the issue stemmed from.
Arguably the best club in France- 9x French league winners, 14x French cup holders, 9x French league cup winners, 10x French super cup winners, PSG sure have dominated their local league this past decades that pundits even nicknamed the league ‘Farmers league’ as it seems the title race is already decided even before starting. looking at the Parisians trophy cabinet, I think it literally has all honours in France which has made the European glory (Champions league) their greatest pursuits of the last decadent . This chase has been futile so far despite their heavy spendings. Bringing in big names from the era of Ibrahimovic, Cavani to the signing of the likes of Di Maria, Neymar (world record fee transfer, and Mbappe. The closest they’ve come to achieving their goal was when Thomas Tuchel led them to the finals in 2020 where they were edged by a lone goal to Bayern.
Last season was yet another disappointment as they got knocked out by Pep’s City. In a bid to quench their thirst for European glory, they went a notch further and broke the bank yet again. Further signing big names like Wijnaldum, Donnarumma, Achraf Hakimi, Sergio Ramos and Arguably the greatest player of all time -Lionel Messi. This squad on paper looks unbeatable and it looked like they would win every competition they’d participate in this season. With the attacking trident of Messi, Mbappe and Neymar which sure is meant to be a nightmare for any defense, some said anything less than the champions league is a disappointment. Well, fast foward to this present time, the world of football sure is disappointed.
In all honesty, PSG have been a great deal below par this season. Having been knocked out of the French cup by Nice in the round of 16 on penalties, Humilated by Real Madrid in the thrilling historic remotanda. The fans sure expressed their disappointment in their preceding home fixture against Bordeaux by whistling, chants and boos majority of which were directed towards Messi and Neymar. Although they convincingly won by 3 goals to nil, it still wasn’t enough to appease the fans and erase their scar of recent disappointments. Just recently, yet another disappointment, losing 3 nil to Monaco in the French league. Although they still seat clearly top on the log, but with the way they’re going, their position is seemingly threatened and this is all they have left to fight for the season . Oh, they still have Mbappe’s signature to fight for as well , their outstanding player of the season is eyeing an imminent move to Madrid. Should both slip from their hands, it’d be another release in the ‘fallen’ series…This is a shocking twist of fate. Hence the reason for naming the article ‘Paris has fallen…the making’. Personally, I hope it doesn’t come crumbling.
