I have a culture of not letting my friends or anyone I value keep making the same mistake, especially when I know I have the ability to do so. Before I go right into the post proper, I would use this opportunity to shout out to my sponsors and all my friends especially those who go out of their way to drop a comment or tip my articles, you all are the very reason why I am still here. Thank you for always being there for me, I sincerely appreciate it.

Let me jump straight into the main event... Are you ready for it guys? Ok, I was watching the Nigerian Idol a few days ago, and during one of the performances, I was moved by one of the performers. For those who do not know, the Nigerian Idol is a platform where youths who believe they have what it takes to become a musical artist compete for the stage and a set price. It is a winner takes it all sort of competition although there are prizes for the runners-up. The truth is that every contestant wants to become the winner and not a runner-up because of the great benefits that go to the winner.

I decided to write this post because I know there are a lot of people on this platform who are into musical performances especially when it has to do with singing. I would want you to see this post as advice coming from a friend who wants the best for you. While I was watching the competition, one of the contestants struck me with his performance and I felt the need to do this. As a certified musicologist with excellent knowledge in performance, I would not be wrong to say that all the other contestants were so busy trying not to make mistakes which made them forget a very vital part of musical performance; The Audience.

When you are on stage as a singer, you must make every effort to connect to the people watching you because they are the reason you are on stage. In a situation where a performer decides to focus more on voice usage than combining the voice and the right stage performance attitude, such a performer will end up singing very well without connecting to the spectators.

What do you think about the performer? He did not only deliver a good stage performance by way of singing the song with such great vocal strength, but he was also able to connect to the spectators by way of his ability to manage and use the stage from all angles.

If I am allowed to name the winner of that day's performance I would not hesitate to name the above singer as the winner of the competition. It is not enough to have a good voice and the ability to control the voice, every vocal performer must be ready to develop and make use of great stage performance in other to always connect easily to the spectators at all times. I remember back then in school when we prepare for individual performances, we were always advised to own the stage and be in command irrespective of any mistake that happens on the stage. The truth is when you as a performer do not take charge of your stage, you will find it very hard to deliver because you will be battling with a lot of things.

As a performer, you are saddled with the job of lighting up the stage with the fire of your vocal power and allowing yourself to at the same time enjoy the entire performance. This is where some of the performers get it all wrong. They allow themselves to focus more on either their voice or the lyrics of the song and forget that they are meant to own and experience the sage. Each time you make good eye contact with your spectators as a singer, you are carefully building a relationship you may never get the chance to build if not on the stage. Take every stage performance very seriously especially if you are a vocal performer. Every Performace Counts. Thank you for your time.

If you are on the stage already, there is no backing out. You have to own the stage and give your all.
