Writing for a wider audience requires a lot of skill and composure towards any topic whether motivational, educational or otherwise. One must be able to look at any topic with open-mindedness to understand how the content will affect the general reader’s mindset. Therefore it is in this light that I write this article this morning not just about how it will affect me but it is about how it will positively affect you, my reader. To begin, I will like to shine a little light on the word knocking. The first thing you will notice is that I am using it in its present participle form. The word knocking means to strike a surface noisily to attract attention, especially when waiting to be let in through a door (source).
It is a verb therefore it requires some amount of action from the person who intends to knock. What does this mean? It means that one cannot say I am knocking on another person’s door while still on his bed in his room. Let me make it a bit clearer. If you wish to visit a friend, first you must have to make the first move by getting yourself to the friend’s house possibly be at his door, ready to knock and keep knocking until the door opens for you.
In the real world scenario, a person who is seeking a job in a firm must first write an application letter as a way of knocking on the door of the firm. This move is not the basic thing for him to do because he must have seen himself to have the qualification needed for the job. Imagine an engineer going to apply for a job in a hospital, its funny right? It will be very hard or almost impossible for him to secure such a job. This leads me to ask this question which we neglect most times. Are you knocking on the right door? For a better understanding, I will rephrase the question. Is the door you knocking at the right one? Some many times in our life we are faced with this great decision to make and most times we fail in taking the right decision.
If for any reason you end up knocking on the wrong door, you will not achieve the necessary goal which you should have achieved if you had knocked on the right door.
The second part of this is that you must learn how to knock continuously until the door is opened to you. Just as I stated above about a person who wants to visit a friend and how he must have to take the first step by leaving his house to be at the door of the friend he intends to visit. He will not just get to the door and end it there he will knock the moment he gets there as a way to announce his arrival. Now that is where the real journey begins. If for any reason the friend does not open the door at the first knock, he will have to either intensify his knocking or continue to knock until the door opens. This is also seen in our praying life. When we pray, we do not just clean our kneel and go out for our normal routine when we have not received an answer to the prayer we made. We will still come back to continue our prayer until we get an answer.
Knocking as we all know is an action word which means that it requires you and me to do our part by taking the first step towards knocking on the door which we intend to open or enter. As a young graduate or a young man, you must learn how and when to knock. If you are seeking a job, you don’t just come to apply for the job when you know that the firm is not advertising for a vacancy.
This is why you must start by either reading the newspaper or surfing through the internet just to get the proper information on when the recruitment will start. When you must have known when to knock, the next thing is to know how to knock. Let me ask you this question, how can you knock on the door of a king whom you seek to get a favour from? Do you bang on the door or do you gently knock? This is an aspect of knocking that eludes most persons and makes it very hard for them to get what they want.
If you intend to seek employment in a firm or an industry, you must try to know the rules on how to apply. I have had the opportunity to seek a job in the industry back in the days and as I got there, I noticed that they application rule is that the application letter must be handwritten and must be presented by the applicants themselves. Now if for any reason you want to apply for a job in such an establishment would you send in your application letter electronically or would you follow the rules they have given? The truth is that you and I know what the outcome will be if we do not follow the rules. You will certainly not get the door open even as you are knocking and no matter how hard you knock, if you do not follow the rules the door will not be opened for you to enter.
Finally, when you must have known when and how to knock, the next thing you must consider is; am I prepared to enter into the door when it is opened for me? This is also a very vital point you must hold onto in this article. You do not knock unprepared if you intend to get into a wedding banquet. Remember what the bible said about the master who threw a wedding feast and asked his servants to go out there and invite anybody they see on the road. While others rushed home to get themselves prepared for the feast, a certain man came just the way he is, looking very shabby and unkempt. When the master saw him, he became so angry and asked his servants to throw him out in the dark. Now, if you intend to get the hospital door to open for you as regards employment, you must first acquire the necessary qualifications before you even think of applying for such a job.
This cuts across every other area of interest because the moment the door is opened for you to come in, everybody expects to see someone who is ready or prepared to be in the house. So when you want to knock, remember to know when and how to knock without forgetting to be prepared for the job ahead so that you will be able to fit in once the door is opened to you.
