It has become a clear fact that every manufacturer or industry has a quality control department where activities concerning the quality and standard of every product they make. This department has a chief quality controller who is saddled with the task of making sure that the processes of production and everything produced passes through different stages of testing, checks and balances. This testing is carried out both on edible and inedible products. Even in our various homes as we prepare our daily meals, there must be steady testing done on the food being prepared so that before anything goes wrong, the cook will know and make necessary corrections to avoid serving visitors or family members unhealthy food.
The question to ask is; why must we test, check and balance whatever we are preparing either for eating purpose or for games?
Checks and balances are very important in whatever we do as humans whether in private or public. Without carrying out these checks, we will not know when and how to improve on the things we are doing. We will make certain mistakes that should have been avoided if we had carried out some checks on ourselves or on the product that is being produced. Even in the government sector, we are meant to understand that the three arms of government i.e. the legislative, executive and judicial work together to for the greater good of the country even though they work together, they have their separate powers. For the smooth operation of these arms of government, check and balances must be carried out in other to curtail every form of excess that may rear its ugly head from any arm.
Now as humans, we cannot leave our lives without having steady testing or carrying out checks and balances on the things we do and how we live our lives. The great philosopher Socrates made us understand that an unexamined life is not worth living and when you carefully think about this statement, you will understand that without proper checks and balances we may end up repeating the same mistakes that have been limiting us from achieving our individual goals. A man who wakes up and does the same thing in the same way without getting any positive result is not carrying out checks and balances on himself.
The question to ask is; how do we carry out these checks and balances?
We made lots of decisions on what we want to achieve this New Year both as individuals and as families or community. As the year is still fresh, so many persons will not bother to carry out checks on what they have been able to achieve even after the first week of this month. Most times when we allow this check to linger, we may end up forgetting or even missing on something we could have corrected if we had carried out the check in the first week. These checks and balances can be carried out either in days i.e. every three days, weekly, monthly, quarterly half-yearly and at the end of every year which should stand as a way of stock-taking.
In my understanding, it is good to carry out the checks and balances every three days of the week or weekly in so doing you will be able to find out on time when there something is about to go wrong. Most times due to how busy you might be, you may be waiting for the month to end and you end up forgetting or something else takes your mind away from checking. This is why we have auditors especially for the financial institutions because once an error has occurred and no one notices it, it may cost the company a huge loss by the time they will find out.
Do not see checks and balances as something that only concerns government agencies, industries or firms alone because every human being who does not examine his life is more or less leading himself to nowhere. Have you considered why teachers give assignments after every class or why they set examinations at the end of every term for students? It is not because they want to do so rather is because they understand that for you to say that a student is following with what you are teaching, the student must be able to show it by way of answering questions both in class and during examinations.
This checks and balances cuts across different spheres. In the family, the parents must be able to check the performance of their children both in behaviour and in academics so that they will know when a child is going against the laid down principles of the family and that of the society at large. Failure to do this, it might result in a child becoming very bad that not even the family will be able to change him. Also, the parents must carry out steady checks on their performance as the head of the house so that they can be able to cover up any loophole that may appear out of nowhere. The lockdown that happened should make every family carry out steady checks on their family especially in the area of food storage. Imagine a family that does not check their food store to know when it is going down so that they can restock, what would have been their lot during that lockdown? Checks and balances are something that goes beyond the arms of government and everybody must make a conscious effort at making it a part of their life so that they can be able to correct any seemingly mistake before it comes to bare.
