She was moved by the pastor’s sermon on that very morning, this made her let out tears from her eyes because she remembered that she has not been all sincere to herself and everyone around her. Elena is a lady in her mid-twenties whose life has been all planned out by her wealthy parents. She was born with a golden spoon and this endeared her to all the kids within her neighbourhood because they all wanted to have a taste of the children’s playing cot which her parents built for her. Elena is that type of girl that can be described as complete by every other person but she thinks otherwise. She had the best of college life because she was the envy of every girl in her school and to crown it all, she attended the great Harvard school of law because she had always dreamt of taking her mother’s footsteps as a lawyer. She enjoyed the best of relationships because every good looking guy was just at her beck and call. Mind you, Elena’s beauty turns the stiffest neck of anyone who sets eyes on her. She never bothered herself about getting a job because she became the director of her mother’s prestigious law firm.

She did not achieve such a fit just because her mother was the owner of the law firm she was able to earn her mother’s trust by coming out tops from Harvard school of law. On her graduation day, Elena’s dad gave her a car gift which of course was not the first time she was receiving a car gift from her father but this one was special because he father bought her a 2020 model Lamborghini which has been her dream car right from when she turned eighteen. In short, Elena’s life is described as perfect but in all that she enjoyed, she was not satisfied she was always complaining about one thing or the other. Most of her close friends began to think of her as an ingrate while others saw her as a spoilt brat. On one of the occasions where she was complaining, her friend Frank was pushed to ask why she complains always. After giving Frank a scornful look, she said: “I complain because I am the only child of my parents, I have no one to play with”. This response got Frank confused because to him having siblings to play with was not enough to make her not be grateful for all the other good things of life she enjoys. Immediately, Frank asked Elena this question: why are you so ungrateful?

Counting your losses and gains

So many times we find ourselves behaving like Elena even amid all the good things of life we enjoy. It is not abnormal for one to exhibit this trait of insatiability which is imbedded in man naturally. The challenge there is when you allow it to becloud your sense of reasoning by making you overlook all the other good things you have in life. When you wake up in the morning and notice that you are hale and hearty, you should be grateful because a lot of people did not have the privilege to see the dawn of a new day. When you drive from your house to all the places you wished to be in a day and by the end of that day you got home safe without any form of stories, you should be mightily grateful because so many died on that very road you drove through. For a man who has been searching for a woman to call his wife, you may think it is easy to find a wife or a woman of your dream. This is why most married men feel like they need not be grateful for finding a good wife.

You will go through school and graduate with the best result and yet you think it’s all because you were very careful throughout your stay in school. Dear, if you recall vividly, you will remember that some of your classmates were not able to finish with you either because of financial constraints or because they died. The life we live is not our own therefore we must make a conscious effort to recognise that we should be grateful at all times irrespective of that which we are looking for.

Counting your losses

I have not seen where anyone complains about the good things he/she is receiving from God or anywhere else. For instance, if you are giving a check of $10 million today and by tomorrow your boss calls you to tell you that he wants to make you the managing director of the firm. Would you comfortably tell your boss that he has given you enough already therefore he should not border? I can count how many persons will do that if they are faced with such an opportunity but the truth is that I doubt if anyone would complain at all. This is because human nature gives room for more and more even when the one we have is enough for us. This is the reason behind our quest for more even when we have gotten what many others do not have. Those in the Forbes list of richest persons in the world will kill to maintain this status even though they understand that if they decide to stop working for the next 1 or 2 years, they will never go broke again but yet, man’s insatiable desire will never allow them to rest. Just like Oliver Twist, they will always want more.

The truth about life is that when you have gotten “A” and you are yet to get “B”, just understand that so many others are yet to get that “A” which you have already gotten. By the time you live your life by remembering this rule, you will see that anything you have not gotten will not make you forget to be grateful for the ones you have gotten. Don’t forget that man is naturally insatiable just like Elena in the story. Always be grateful for the one you have today for when you do that, the one of tomorrow will come to you. I hope I have been able to talk to you.

I love you all.
