The first thing you will see in a carton containing home appliance especially television set is the remote control. I remember back in the days when I was very much younger, I usually see my father holding the remote of the television set in his hands. One of those days, I was moved to ask him; “Dad, why are you always holding the remote on your hand?” The response he gave to me was really funny but it was a great moral lesson for me. I know you will be wondering what his response was. You don’t have to stress so much about it because I will tell you what his response was but before then, let me take you into the world of remote and what remotes are meant for.
Remote control is an electronic device that serves as a bridge between an electrical appliance and its owner. Mind you this is my definition of remote control so you should try not to quote me if you are asked to define a remote control. Although my definition may sound like something gotten from the gutters, I would want you to take a good look at the definition again; Remote control, an electronic device that serves as a bridge between an electrical appliance and its owner. Does it sound like what it is used for? To be frank and for record sake, the remote is just a middle man. If you are watching a particular channel on your television and after some time you decided to watch another channel, how do you do it if you don’t want to use the television manual operating button? You will just change it effortlessly with the aid of the remote. What happens when you send a letter to your friend via the courier services around your area? You could have gone to deliver the message to your friend by yourself but you decide to seek the aid of the middle man is the courier service which stands as a bridge between you and your friend.
Are you following my line of logic? So if a middle man is someone or something that works in-between you and the other person, why then do you see the remote as less? I am not here to talk about the remote or its definition rather I am here to direct your mind towards something we neglect must times. Don’t forget that I am yet to tell you about my father’s response to the question I asked him. Majority of us will smash the remote control on the wall the moment it malfunctions. This brings me to this great question; how often do you chastise yourself whenever you misbehave? Don’t you know that you are just like a remote control but the difference is that yours is self-control? Are you still on the ride with me?
Ok, my father told me that the reason he holds the remote in his hand is that he wants to be the one in control of what he watches anytime he cares to watch the television. Now, to a feeble-minded person, his response may look unimportant or even illogical but I want you to look at the response in this light. Let’s assume that the remote is your mindset as a human, would you feel comfortable for another person to be in control of what goes into your mind? We have heard so many times about self-control. The greatest threat a man will have is the lack of self-control. By the time you understand what is happening to you, you would have ended up making the decision that will ruin you and in extreme cases result into total obliteration from the surface of the earth.
I want to believe that you have understood my analysis with the remote and how I was able to connect it with self-control. Now, the ultimate question will be; how do I develop a strong level of self-control? You might be an adult and yet you are easily pushed into doing things you wouldn’t do ordinarily. The truth is, self-control is a virtue every human been must work hard to possess because, without it, life will become more like a puppet. The first thing to do for you to develop self-control is to acknowledge that you need help; this will lead you into searching for a way out. The second thing to do is that you must make sure that those things or persons that influence you must be consciously cut off at all cost. The most important aspect of self-control development is self-trust. You must be able to trust yourself when it comes to decision making since your mind and personality work together, cutting across all other levels of life.
Lastly, take a closer look at the analysis I made with the remote control and my father’s response, you will see that there is an overflowing knowledge hidden behind those lines of wisdom. A piece of quick advice, if you know that you are yet to attain that high level of self-control, you should avoid having anything to do with those who are constantly pushing you into doing things that you ordinarily will not do if given the chance. I know a lot of friends who have gone into smoking and usage of hard drugs just because they allowed themselves to be controlled by others. Since you can easily smash the remote control of your television set out of anger because it failed to deliver, what then can you do to yourself for failing to be the person you were created to be?
