Mistakes are the way we learn, and they are by definition unavoidable. This is one of the many harsh realities. No one can avoid mistakes. You shouldn't beat yourself up for making mistakes, because if you are not making mistakes then you aren't learning.
However, there is a difference between mistakes and just plain bad decisions. Cheating on someone is not a "mistake." It's a bad decision. No one accidentally cheats on someone.
