Is it the charging Adapter or the phone circuitry that actually recharges the battery of the phone?

Both of them play vital role to charge the phone. The main function of the adapter is to give the required amount of voltage and current to the phone circuit so that the it won't damage.

When the supply is given to the phone circuit via adapter, the circuit of the phone to connected to the battery and it charges the battery.
