Last season saw various stars rise and fall in the Chelsea squad.
One of those with the greatest decline was Michy Batshuayi. The striker was actually Frank Lampard’s second choice for the early stages of the season, but several bad performances when given the opportunity to start in the lead up to Christmas convinced the manager that Tammy Abraham and Olivier Giroud were the better options.
Meanwhile Billy Gilmour was just emerging, taking his chances at the start of 2020 to work his way into Lampard’s plans.
Now here we are at the start of a new season and Michy has been sent out on loan, allowing Gilmour to steal his number 23 shirt for the season.
The Belgian striker jokingly told Billy on Twitter “I thought you were my guy” after the theft of his preferred digits.
Let’s hope Crystal Palace have left 23 free at least.
