👊“Ang kabataan ang pag-asa ng bayan” — is a popular Filipino saying from Dr. Jose Rizal.
☝Remember the popular motto of batang 90's on their slam note? — “education is the best foundation.”
🔎Why did I highlighted those sayings? Because, I want to emphasize the importance of education and the role of the new generation — the youth. In connection to the class opening and the current situation, I still agree that the youth is the hope of our mother land.
📝In this article, I want to share my point of views — whether you like it or you will like it very much 😂 (just kidding aside though).
📌First, I want to express my concern at this time — obviously, we're still in crisis due to the COVID19 pandemic and I believe that everyone's concern at this moment is SAFETY.
⏩Next, we cannot neglect our duty to educate our children, neither we can disregard the importance of EDUCATION.
🔴Last but not the least, I understand that our government is running out of FINANCIAL resources. I am afraid that it can no longer provide financial assistance to the agency who need it the most, especially at this time.
👉Now, here's the hot topic : the DepEd has released its pronouncement that classes for Public Schools will start on August 24, while private schools may start as early as month of June. We're glad that they never forget to remind teachers, students and parents to observe the new normal — wear face mask, observe physical distancing, etc., but I am not sure if everyone is ready for this. How prepared are we? If I am the parent, I will doubt to send my child to school unless the cure or vaccine for COVID19 is already available to the public.
👌There are some suggestions : to conduct classes online (dowloadable lessons, educational videos, etc.) and for offline classes, teacher may give students modules — this is actually a great idea, however it will be a big rock for both teachers, students and parents.
💻Online lesson is a good alternative to learn while you are at the comfort of your home, at the same time you have avoided the crowd (mass gathering) and you surely complied the new norms on physical distancing — but not all can afford this option.
👍Personally, I commend the initiative of DepEd and other institution to endorse the online class (DepEd Commons for public schools) as an alternative to make sure that aspiring students for S.Y. 2020-2021 has the option to study their lessons without compromising their safety. This option have been implemented in China when everybody was required to stay at their homes. How did I know? One of my student told me that aside from having online class in ESL, their school also offers online classes.
❓Hmmm... But you know what? DepEd proposed online class may be different from theirs. Why? Because, we do live class online with student — teacher interaction. We use to have a virtual classroom, lessons in PPT/PDF and other materials necessary for online teaching. Whoah, I know that it may take some time if DepEd would implement the same online class style. This could be the BIIIG ROOOCK! But this isn't impossible. Somehow, downloadable lessons and using of educational videos is ok, but it wouldn't be enough compared to the traditional teaching method, at least it's not bad.
📑Using of module — if online class is not applicable. Well, Filipinos are really “madiskarte,” we are used to get out of the box, we can think of several options. I won't disagree, modular class is beneficial for those who live in rural and most remote areas where internet connection is intermittent or worse is not available. Honestly, these are not the only reasons why our children may not be able to take their lessons, it could be financial instability.
✅Don't get me wrong, I know that every parents wish their children a better and brighter future, and every children wish the same.
📚Right here, let's discuss if conducting physical classes at school is necessary. We've presented options above and at this time of pandemic, it would suit to address the necessity of education. However, if the DepEd would insist to have a physical classes, maybe it's up to the parents whether to send their children at school or not.
💥Another point is that our situation right now is like we're on WAR, if we're on war we have to stay at home to keep ourselves and our loved ones safe. If we're on war, I think no one would bother to think of their lessons, no one would bother to go to work — NO ONE. Opening of school year as early as month of June and doing physical classes at school is like running through the streets with landmines. We don't know where the landmine is, until we stepped on it and explodes.
🏥Unless we all have the equipment or the antidote to counter strike the hidden traps and enemies, I wouldn't risk the life of my child to go to school and regret at the end.
💡I believe that our government and its respective agency who is tasked to ensure the quality education especially now (in challenging time) can come up a better solution. Let's not stuck into the old way of teaching. Traditional teaching is good, but we are left behind now. It's time for a change, embrace the new normal — innovation for better education. Otherwise, suspend classes until approved medicine for COVID19 is available.
🙏I know thay everyone will be used to the new normal. Let's hope and pray that our leaders may discern the best for its people.
