The importance of being in good terms with girls those days in secondary school can never be overrated. You may really not appreciate or understand this until either on the day of gala-night, send off party or any other occasion in school when they cook and share food and pass you while sharing. The school has cooks who make foods for students but on special occasions such as the gala-nights and send offs, girls were left to take charge of cooking for students and woe betide you if you are not on their good book.

Gala-night was a party held at the eve of departure from school. It was usually done at the end of the week of staying in school to await results after writing exams. Specifically, it was organized a night preceding the morning students went on vacations. The gala-nights were direct responsibility of the social prefect and senior class. Once the school is done with exams, efforts are already atop gears preparing for the eventful night. The entire students were divided into groups numbering four or thereabouts. On those nights particularly, students entertained themselves with all kinds of dances, dramas, competitions, fun boxes, comedies, interludes, catwalks , etc.

Of all the gala-nights organized back then in school, the ones the school computer master was the DJ remain fresh and unbeaten in minds and memories. People relish and recount those moments with fervor unto this day.

Master Pius Achi is the name of the then computer master. But students called him "Muchocho". That was sometimes in our JSS1, master Pius was newly taken to undertake students on computer practicals. He seemed energetic and had time to chase and wipe any students to any length. Pius was fond of calling students "Caribbean Muchocho". And students, after sometimes, nicknamed him "Muchocho". Till this day we do not know the meaning of "muchocho" but all we know is that master Pius was a muchocho because he had a penchant for the word.

Muchocho's mastery of the disc jockey was legendary and unrivalled. The way he masterfully mixed the songs left students dancing and rolling waists excitedly from one corner to another. There was hardly any student who was sitted whenever he put a music. He doesn't force any student to dance. But the manner he mixed his songs with the accompanied blood stirring and intoxicating rhythm forced students on their feet freespiritedly.

Uproariously, on those gala-nights, there were unclear movements of boys and girls who strategically hung in dark corners. There also were prevalence of rustic hungers as foods were never done on time. Moreover, when done, it was not shared until late in the night when most or all activities were presented. By such times, many students were already yawning non-stop, angry over everything, cursing nobody in particular and sighing every second.

And when it is finally time to share foods, girls first give special attention to those they roll with. They will carry food and bypass you sitted at the front more than hundred times to attend to their persons at the far back. Meanwhile, these their persons started embezzling pots of food right from evening when they finished cooking and smuggled some quantity for them.

The bottomline is this; if you don't get on well with girls, on such nights it's either hunger k!ll you or you eat leftovers, that's even if you are fortunate enough to chance on any.

That hunger did not k!ll Emmanuel Ogodo before daybreak after food did not reach him during one gala-night was God's grace. What happened? They were sharing food accordingly and when it got to Emma's turn they told him "food has finish". That was a very painfully statement to tell any hungry person.

When school resumed the following term, Emma told me he liked the manner I was taken care of during gala-night, he also said he would want to be treated like that too. He begged me to help him chase Chinemerem as he wouldn't want a repeat of what happened the last time but I refused. He decided to go and chase the girl by himself, master Okey caught him and wrote their names in "lovers and their love letters". Fr. told him to go home and call his parents, after master Okey flogged him and the girl like thieves.

My guy ran kitikiti and ran katakata.
