I'm sure that you all are familiar with genetically modified organisms and your science teacher discussed it when you are in high school. But what is genetically modified organisms?
GMOs or genetically modified organisms are organisms that undergo a modification in their DNA to change its characteristics. Scientists change their genomes in a way that does not happen naturally.
What is Genome?
Genome is a genetic information of an organism. It provides all of the information the organism requires to function. In living organism, like us, the genome is stored in long molecules of DNA called chromosomes.
Name any organism and it can be genetically modified but laws restrict the creation of genetically modified human. Example of genetically modified organisms are genetically modified crops in agriculture and genetically modified animals used in research.
How to make a genetically modified organisms?
By genetic engineering scientists can alter or manipulate an organism genome. Scientists can also change the characteristics of an organism by bringing another new piece of DNA into their genome. This could be that the new DNA is taken from the same species or the DNA is taken from different species or the DNA is made in the laboratory synthetically, it is either of the three. And the process of creating genetically modified organisms is called genetic modification.
Why do we use genetically modified organisms?
Let's focus in farming and how farmers use genetically modified crops.
When farmers planted their non genetically modified crops they are more worried about the insects and pests that prevent them to have a good harvest. That is why they use genetically modified crops because it addresses their problem about the insect and pests that eat their crops. Genetically modified crops can repel particular insects and pests that feeds on it. That is why farmer's need in pesticides are lowered. However plants are not the only type of genetically modified organisms that we use. Genetically modified organisms also help to produce medicines and vaccines that help to treat and prevent various diseases.
We should care about genetically modified product because it have a huge potential to save money, eliminates poverty, reduce hunger and promote innovative practices.
