Halloween in Taiwan

I have lived in Taiwan for almost 30 years and I have always felt sorry for the kids here. Even in elementary school, they have exams, lots of homework, and academics are very important. While this is good for some things, it really takes a toll on their childhood. As a result, my wife and I do what we can to make children fun. Sometimes the parents like it and sometimes they feel as if it is a waste of time. Halloween is not celebrated here, but we have activities and our cram school. This year we couldn’t have a big Halloween party- like we usually do. This was because their exams are on 11/2-11/3. So we created 4 smaller parties that matched their English class. Yesterday, we had the first two. One was at the local elementary school. Because it was an educational activity, it had to be more “educational”. We had a lot of coloring, reading, and videos. But we still had fun activities. I made a Halloween piñata and we had spooky hopscotch have.

After that, at our cram school, we had a Halloween DIY. We taught the students to make scary "Witches teeth" from homemade cookies and strawberry jam with marshmallows.

The second party was at our cram school/cram school. It involved trick or treating and a piñata. We also had classroom activities -speaking and writing. It was exhausting and a little hectic, but it was worth it. For some kids, it will be the only time that they will celebrate a "Kids Holiday" in a community way.
