We have heard it but don't know much about it...

I am going to brief you about United Nation (UN) founded in 1945 and its agencies.

  • 2nd World War created need of International Institution that will function as Peace-Maker. So does the UN founded in 1945 by 50 countries representative signed UN charter (kind of principle or rules that every country should adhered to).

  • It has currently 193 Country as members.

  • Apart from peace making UN functioned as protecting human rights, delivering humanitarian aid, promoting sustainable development and upholding international law.

Lets talk about its Components and Agencies:-

Components:--> i.e main organs/branch of UN

1) The General Assembly --> All 193 countries are members of this assembly and elect President every 5 years. Currently, 74th President - Tijjani Muhammad-Bande (Country-Nigeria)

2) The Security Council --> It has primary responsibility, under the UN Charter, for theĀ maintenance of international peace and security. Only 5 members (US,UK,Russia,China,France) and has Veto Power for each member.

Please Note: Veto Power is extremely important as it can grant to Wage war against another country or reject it.

3) The Economic and Social Council --> As its name suggest, its primarily responsible for maintaining Economic, Social and Environmental Issues.

4) The Trusteeship Council --> It is no longer operating now but still counted as branch.

5) The International Court of Justice --> is the principal judicial organ of the United Nations. Current ICJ chief- Abdulqawi Yusuf (Country- Somali)

6) The UN Secretariat --> It means adminidtrative staff that are working in UN. Working in UN is really a prestigious job.

Now I will tell you UN agencies -->

Literally there are around 100s of agencies that are working but I will list only those which we are familiar with or have importance or are specialize in working.

  • World Bank

  • International Monetary Fund (IMF)

  • Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO)

  • The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO)

  • The International Labour Organization (ILO)

  • The International Maritime Organization (IMO)

  • International Telecommunication Union (ITU)

  • The World Health Organization (WHO

  • International Organization for Migration (IOM)

  • The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF)

  • United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)

  • United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC)

  • United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR)

  • The United Nations Environment Programme (UN Environment)

UN's Contribution to World:-

  • Maintaining Peace and Security- This is very vital function of UN

  • Preventing Nuclear Proliferation

  • Preventing genocide

  • Promoting Development

  • Alleviating Rural Poverty

  • Focusing on African Development- Yes, UN's contribution towards African Continent has achieve people's health, education, povery alleviation, prevent deforestation etc.

  • Social Development

  • Protecting Human Rights and Animals Right- It prevent trading of Animals body part.

  • Environment- Example Climate Change, protecting Ozone layer

  • International Law- Example International Court of Justice

  • Humanitarian Affairs- Example Providing Food to the Neediest, Refugee etc

  • Health

At last, UN has declare Sustainable Development Goals (SDG i.e it has 17 Goals) which literally cover every aspect of life, non life, environment, finance, social, development etc.

List of 17 Goals:-->

1) No Poverty 2) Zero Hunger 3) Good Health and Well-being

4) Quality Education 5) Gender Equality 6) Clean Water andĀ Sanitation

7) Affordable and Clean Energy 8) Decent Work and Economic Growth

9) Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure 10) Reducing Inequality

11) Sustainable Cities and Communities 12) Responsible Consumption and Production

13) Climate Action 14) Life Below Water 15) Life On Land

16) Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions 17) Partnerships for the Goals

This SDG will be achieved by 2030 and every country has participated in it.
