Why is Hong Kong fuming again?
Why do I need to write this issue?. Well, Many of us didn't know how is the administrative set up in China i.e. One Country, Two System (kind of governing principles for Hong Kong and Macau)
Hong Kong is burning again. Last year it was about Fugitive Offender bill which penalize for fugitive offender i.e. victim would be extracted for trial in Chinese mainland instead of Hong Kong Jurisdiction. But now, its new legislation National Security Law, which penalize for insulting national anthem of china. But people do fear that this bill will take away there basic freedom.
Recently, Lawmakers have approved a proposal for sweeping new national security legislation, which democracy advocate believe that will curb essential basic freedom.
Hong Kong is an autonomous territory, and a former British Colony, in southeastern China. It is now Global Financial Hub- so a hit to its economy may affect global financial economy. You can imagine how Hong Kong is serving financially.
It became a colony of the British Empire at the end of First Opium War in 1842. (You can google Opium Wars).
After 105 years of ruling over the Hong Kong, British Empire returned the Sovereignty of Hong Kong to China in 1947. But with a condition that region should be administered as Special Representative Zone (SAR). It means, Hong Kong maintains governing power and economic system that are separate from those of mainland China.
Later on, many protest began as domination by China Mainland increases. So, it results in British-China joint declaration in 1984 which guarantees basic law (kind of mini constitution) for 50 years after the transfer of sovereignty i.e. upto 2047.
The handover agreement gave Hong Kong special freedoms of press, speech, and assembly for at least 50 years
But this joint declaration doesn't specify how Hong Kong will governed after 2047. Thus, the central government’s role in determining the territory’s future system of government is the subject of political debate and speculation in Hong Kong.
So does the current law may restrict there freedom of speech, assembly, expression etc in the name of national security. This is in stark contrast to the Joint Declaration by British-China which propose Special Administrative Region for at least 50 years.
Therefore, Hong Kong is fuming again.
Note:- I have skipped many points so that reader could understand briefly current issues of Hong Kong and save there reading time. Thanks for reading it.
You are the first who wrote a clear article about the situation and how it came that far. The question is what does Hong King want? As I understand China say they are not Chinese and they only want it because if the benefits they have from it? There was a time I read "made in Hong King" now it's "made in China". 🤔
Is Hong King able to defend itself against China? Can it survive without the help of the UK and Western world?
It's a difficult situation and I doubt a peaceful solution will be found. Strong doubt I have too about the media. Every news I read, no matter where, is colored and the media is owned by a handful of people in this world. They decide what news is, what people are allowed to know and are brainwashing whole generations.
