Practice the Basic Game Mechanics
Mastering the basic game mechanics like aiming, spray pattern control and movement is equally important for beginners as pros. This has to be practiced deliberately on a daily basis or you will loose your skills. Take a 3 week break from playing CS:GO and you know what we mean. Having a high “mechanical” skill is the deciding factor if you are head to head with another player and you both know where you are. It does not however help you against player with superior game sense, when they sneak up on you form an unexpected angle. How to train basic game mechanics.
LEVEL 1: EMPTY MAP
Open an empty server
e.g. map de_dust2_se
Configure the server for training in the console
sv_cheats 1 (Cheat Mode on)
impulse se 101 (16000 money)
sv_showimpacts 1 (show impacts)
sv_infiniteammo 2 (infinite ammo)
Buy the weapon you want to improve your aiming skill with
if you are uncertain, a good start would be the AK47
Exercise:
shoot against a wall and control your spray pattern
start with trying to do only single shots
then 2 which also usually land on the exact same spot, depending on the weopon
then 3, now practice to pull down at the right moment to land all bullets on the same spot
then 4 and so on
progress to more shots only when you have mastered one level
LEVEL 2: AGAINST BOTS
Open a local map with bots
e.g. map de_dust2_se
Configure the server for training in the console
sv_cheats 1 (Cheat Mode on)
impulse se 101 (16000 money)
Buy the weapon you want to improve your aiming skill with
Exercise:
go for head shots only
don’t worry about getting killed
focus on your aiming and movement
raise bot difficulty over time
LEVEL 3: DEATHMATCH SERVER
Open a community server in Deathmatch (dm) mode
Deathmatch is one of the best practices, because it maximizes the number of engagements per time
Buy the weapon you want to improve your aiming skill with
most Deathmatch servers let you choose one weapon with which you will respawn after getting killed immediately
Exercise:
go for head shots only
don’t worry about getting killed
don’t get angry towards other players
don’t watch your Kill /Death ratio
focus on your aiming and movement
try to put fit in 30-60min of DM practice before you play competitive Counter-Strike matches
Practice Your Game Sense
Game sense is your understanding of the current state of the game. It is like the mechanical skills considered to a single players skill and you can practice it alone without a fixed team. These are some of the topics you want to focus on to improve your game sense:
Your mental understanding of the map
Where the common spots on each map are
How much time it takes to get from point A to point B
Where your team is and where your enemies are
When and where to throw grenades
HOW TO PRACTICE YOUR GAME SENSE:
Play competitive matches
Play with people better than you and be willing to learn from them
Practice Your Teamwork
Playing as a team is rare in random competitive matches. Therefore it important to find a group of 5 friends to play Counter-Strike with on a regular basis. Try to have at least one player in your team who knows strategy. Try to discuss strategies on different maps and situations all the time and practice, practice, practice.
