The most important function of the kidney is to remove waste products from the body through urine. In this way, kidneys maintain the chemical balance of the body. Kidneys also produce some hormones for other organs to function well. These hormones increase the production of red blood cells, control the metabolism of calcium and regulate blood pressure.

Nephrons present in the kidneys helps in filtering out waste products from the blood. They also metabolize nutrients in the blood. There are two kidneys in a human body that perform all functions if one of the kidneys is removed due to failure, the other kidney works well. Failure of both the kidneys can lead to severe illness and even death so kidney transplant is needed.
