Singapore was inhabited as early as the 2nd century, according to archaeological finds, but its first official historical mention dates back to the 14th century in Chinese texts. At that time, the island was a trading port for Chinese, Malay and Indian merchants. It was also influenced by regional empires such as Srivijaya and Majapahit.

Arrival of Europeans
