First, I would like to give you the information that I started writing on Medium. I'm not able to publish any link into this article so my Medium username is this one "Clement Delabruyere"

Indeed, it is very important for me growing a community on Medium. But now let's start my article about Paris.

Short presentation

Paris is the capital and largest city of France, located in the heart of the country. It covers an area of around 105.4 square kilometers and has a population of around 2.1 million in the commune of Paris, and over 10 million in the metropolitan area.

The city of Paris is world-famous for its iconic monuments such as the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, Notre-Dame Cathedral and the Arc de Triomphe. It is renowned for its rich cultural heritage, world-renowned museums, delicious cuisine and thriving arts scene.

Paris is divided into 20 arrondissements, numbered 1 to 20, which spiral out from the historic center. Each arrondissement has its own distinct characteristics, ranging from lively districts like the Marais and Montmartre, to chic residential areas like the 16th arrondissement.

Geopolitically, Paris plays a crucial role as France's political, economic and cultural center. It is home to the seat of the French government, the Élysée presidential palace, as well as numerous international institutions such as UNESCO and the OECD. Paris is also a major financial and commercial center, attracting companies and investors from all over the world.

In short, Paris is a captivating and cosmopolitan city, blending history, art, gastronomy and fashion. With its romantic charm, rich culture and global influence, Paris remains one of the world's most popular destinations.

Historical background

The history of Paris goes back more than 2,000 years. The first traces of human occupation date back to Gallo-Roman times, when the region was inhabited by the Gauls, a Celtic population. The Romans conquered the region in 52 BC and founded a city called Lutetia on the Ile de la Cité, in the heart of what is now the center of Paris.

Lutetia was a small fortified city, thriving thanks to its strategic location on the Seine and its trade links with the rest of the Roman Empire. Over time, the city grew and expanded beyond the Île de la Cité. However, in the 5th century, the Roman Empire began to decline, and Lutetia suffered from the barbarian invasions.

In the Middle Ages, the city was conquered by the Franks and became the capital of the kingdom of France. It was renamed Paris and developed as a political, economic and cultural center. During this period, many of Paris' landmarks were built, including Notre-Dame de Paris Cathedral and the Sorbonne University.

The Renaissance brought a period of prosperity to Paris, with major artistic and intellectual developments. Under the reign of Louis XIV, the Sun King, Paris was transformed into a grandiose, monumental city. Ambitious urban planning projects were undertaken, such as the construction of the Avenue des Champs-Élysées and the Palace of Versailles.

In the 18th century, Paris became the center of the French Revolution, which led to major political and social upheavals in France. The Bastille, an emblematic prison of the Ancien Régime, was stormed by revolutionaries in 1789, marking the start of the Revolution.

In the 19th century, Paris underwent considerable modernization and expansion. Haussmann's work transformed the city with the opening of wide boulevards, the construction of parks and the embellishment of many neighborhoods. Paris became the cultural center of Europe, attracting renowned writers, artists and intellectuals.

During the First and Second World Wars, Paris was occupied by German forces, but the city resisted and regained its freedom. After the war, Paris continued to prosper, becoming one of the world's most popular tourist destinations.
