Historical background

Madrid's history goes back many centuries, long before the city we know today was established. The precise origins of Madrid are shrouded in legend and myth, but the earliest archaeological evidence dates back to pre-Roman times, when the region was inhabited by various Iberian tribes.

In the 9th century, during the period of Muslim rule in Spain, Madrid was a small fortress called "Mayrit", located on a strategic hill. In 1085, the city was conquered by the Christian king Alfonso VI of Castile, marking the beginning of Christian influence over the region. However, Madrid remained relatively insignificant over the following centuries, due to its remote position from the major centers of power.
