Here is my second article about a city : Geneva. I wanted to write about this city because I visited it at the beginning of the year as I have friends living in Switzerland.

But before, I would like to give you the information that I started writing on Medium. My profile is this one : "Clement Delabruyere". I would be very grateful if you can follow my profile on Medium.

But now let's start with the "capital of peace".

Short presentation

Geneva is located in Switzerland, on the shores of Lake Geneva. It covers an area of around 16.8 km². With a population of around 203,000, it is the country's second most populous city after Zurich.

This multicultural city is renowned for its major role in international affairs, being the headquarters of numerous international organizations, including the United Nations, the World Health Organization and the World Trade Organization. Geneva is also the diplomatic center for many world summits and negotiations.

Geneva is distinguished by its magnificent setting, with the Alps as a backdrop and Lake Geneva bordering the city. It boasts a rich cultural scene, world-renowned museums, lush green parks and year-round cultural and sporting events.

The city is not divided into arrondissements, but into several distinct districts, each with its own charm and distinctive features. Geneva's landmarks include the Jet d'Eau, the Old Town, the Palais des Nations and the famous Horloge fleurie.

In geopolitical terms, Geneva plays an essential role as a center for international negotiations and conflict resolution. Its historical neutrality makes it an ideal venue for diplomatic talks between nations. It is thus a symbol of peace and international cooperation, contributing to global stability and the promotion of human rights.

Historical background

Geneva's history dates back to antiquity, long before our era. Initially, the region was inhabited by Celtic and pre-Celtic peoples. In the 1st century BC, the Romans conquered the region and established a lasting presence, founding a Roman colony called "Genava" on the site of present-day Geneva. The Roman city prospered thanks to its strategic position along trade routes and the Rhone.

Over the centuries, the region came under the control of the Burgundians, the Franks and the Kingdom of Burgundy. Around the year 1000, Geneva became an independent city-state, governed by bishops. The city prospered thanks to trade and its position on the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela.

However, in the 13th century, Geneva sought to free itself from the tutelage of the bishops and gain greater autonomy. This led to internal conflicts and alliances with neighboring cities. Finally, in 1535, the Protestant Reformation was introduced into the city by Jean Calvin, a French reformer. Geneva then became a Protestant theocratic republic and an important center of the Protestant Reformation in Europe.

Over the following centuries, the Republic of Geneva experienced periods of instability, political infighting and tensions with its neighbors. In 1815, Geneva joined the Swiss Confederation as a full-fledged canton, after being occupied by Napoleonic French troops.

From the 19th century onwards, Geneva underwent significant economic development, becoming a renowned financial, industrial and cultural center. The city also played host to numerous international organizations, reinforcing its role as a diplomatic center and headquarters for many global institutions.

Today, Geneva is a modern, cosmopolitan city, renowned for its key role in international affairs, its commitment to peace, human rights and global cooperation. Its rich and varied past is reflected in its architecture, cultural traditions and status as an international crossroads.
