Historical background

Amsterdam's history dates back to ancient times, when the region was inhabited by Germanic tribes. However, the city as we know it today has medieval roots. In the 12th century, a dam was built on the Amstel River, giving rise to the small settlement of Amstelredamme, which literally means "the Amstel dam". Amstelredamme began to grow thanks to river and sea trade.

In the early 17th century, Amsterdam emerged as an important European commercial and financial center. The creation of the Dutch East India Company in 1602 and the Dutch West India Company in 1621 stimulated maritime trade, enabling Amsterdam to become a hub for world trade. Merchants amassed considerable wealth from the trade in spices, textiles and other goods.

The Dutch Golden Age (17th century) was a period of prosperity for Amsterdam. The city became a cultural hotbed, with art, literature and science flourishing. Artists such as Rembrandt and Vermeer contributed to the emergence of a flourishing art scene.

During the 18th century, Amsterdam's influence declined in part due to the rise of commercial competitors and political instability. However, the city continued to play an important role on the European stage.

In the 19th century, the Netherlands underwent major political changes under Napoleon's French rule. After these tumults, Amsterdam evolved into an industrial economy and modernized, developing infrastructures such as the rail network and port facilities.

The 20th century brought challenges and transformations. During the Second World War, Amsterdam was occupied by the Nazis, and persecution of the Jews reached tragic levels, as witnessed by the Anne Frank Museum. After the war, the city quickly recovered and regained its economic and cultural vitality.

Today, Amsterdam is recognized as an innovative, tolerant and global city. Its rich and complex history continues to be reflected in its historic buildings, tangled canals and vibrant cultural scene, making it a popular destination worldwide.
