Oligarchy means that a small group, organization, or institution is having control over a country or a state.
How is ABS-CBN Corporation related to oligarchy?
Since ABS-CBN is one of the biggest media networks in the Philippines, it is easily linked as an oligarch. The media network has been said to be manipulative in social media and to the government. Its franchise has been denied because of some issues that the network doesn't address properly. Now their fans in the whole country are frustrated, disappointed, and furious about the network shutdown. Due to this situation, posts with hate speeches, bashing the government, and criticism for those congressmen who denied the request for a franchise renewal has been spreading across the internet (mostly on social media platforms).
Artists from ABS-CBN, defending their station, acted as the lawyers. They have criticized by the netizens for giving stupid statements. Employees of the network have been put as bait to the government's decision to the franchise. Supporters of the network made a noise barrage together with employees and rallied. They claimed to Protect Press Freedom, saying that killing the network is equivalent to killing the Freedom of the Press.
It's true that the network's shutdown will affect the economy for it is one of the biggest taxpayers of the country. It also controls other sub-companies and foundations working for them. These properties and connections effortlessly influence people's mindsets. Their news and documentaries have been the most trusted information, though accused of being biased.
In this kind of situation, it is better not to take any sides. The best thing to do is to look at both sides of the said parties. Then analyze what has been wrong and what they have done right. I should leave the decision to all of you, whether the network is an oligarch or not.
