One of the standards of proper nutrition is eating vegetables and fruits, but many Filipinos do not eat the right amount. Studies and surveys conducted by the Food and Nutrition Research Institute or FNRI have shown that the consumption of fruits and vegetables by Filipinos is declining, and there is no shortage of micronutrients. The micronutrients we usually get from vegetables and fruits and help our body to rejuvenate and prevent diseases. Therefore, it is advisable to eat a lot of vegetables and fruits to make up for micronutrient deficiencies. What is the importance of eating vegetables regularly? Green leafy and yellow vegetables or green leafy and yellow vegetables are rich in beta-carotene. Fresh and moderately cooked green leafy vegetables are a source of vitamin C, iron, calcium, dietary fiber, folic acid, vitamin E, and some phytochemicals. Non-leafy vegetables such as okra, sayote, upo, and ampalaya add dietary fiber, iron and B-complex vitamins. So eating vegetables is really important because it helps prevent vitamin A deficiency disorders or VADD which is one of the most common types of malnutrition in the Philippines. Like vegetables, fruits are important in our diet because they are rich in vitamin C, especially guava, mango and papaya. Vitamin C helps to prevent scurvy or bleeding or inflammation of the gums and to strengthen our resistance to infection.
