11:00 pm,
Arrived at my safe zone,
Long boulevards, busy streets, roads covered with trees,
Home.

You’re still awake with the usual reason of unable to sleep.
“Have you eaten? How are you?” the usual question.
Changed my clothes, eat my dinner, take some rest.
Lay down the couch facing you.

“Long time ago, when I’m still winning the trust of your grandparents,
I gather fire woods for cooking,
Rice planting early in the morning,
Driving the tricycle at noon.”

“I want to be a Civil Engineer before,
Life’s hard, working while studying,
Supporting my own basic needs, I gave up my studies.
But life doesn’t stop there; it goes on so you have to move forward.”

12:00 am
Told him engineering is hard,
I kept on failing my subjects,
Insisted I’m not capable of finishing my course.

“You failed today? Try again tomorrow,
It’s surely difficult, but I know you can finish the race,
Some will say harsh words that’ll hurt you,
Still, continue.”

1:00 am
“You know I drank a lot before,
But I should be the only drunkard in our family,
I also gamble, but never get addicted to it,
It serves as extra income.”

“My body is weakening now,
When I reach the age of 60, you should’ve finished your studies.”
You shared different silly things you did back in high school,
Various life experiences- struggles, joy, love.

2:00 am
Your knees ached as you stand up,
Spoke about sleeping because it’s late,
Remind me to put blanket.

You’ll always be my favorite story teller,
Your stories’ a music to my ear,
Calm to my mind,
And guide to my own battle.
