Why are Filipinos Fanatic of Pageantry?
The Philippines are known as a Asian powerhouse in pageantry, we have four crowns in Miss Universe, four crowns in Miss Earth, one crown in Miss World and Six crowns in Miss International. We have also crowns in Big six pageants like Miss Supranational and Miss Intercontinental even in minor pageants. If boys are fanatics of basketball, and boxing; girls and gays like watching pageantry especially Miss Universe. Like boxing, the whole of the family is so serious to watch Miss Universe on tv. Sometimes they are screaming for our representative as if she will hear us. Each barangay or hometown, we have our own pageantry. It has barangay pageant, gay pageant, pageant for fat, pageant for pregnant woman, pageant for men, pageant for lesbian or transgender. Local pageantry usually happens during fiesta. Even school has a pageant too. That’s how we are entertained by pageantry. So I will jot down why Filipinos are fanatics of pageantry.
Government supports pageantry
Pageantry has a good way to promote our country and also pageantry can bring a lot of sponsors and money.
It’s a part of Filipino culture
Even in many years we are fond of the idea of beauty pageant. We think beauty pageant is showcasing woman empowerment than women exploitation. It’s a sign of success and popularity when you win a beauty pageant.
American Occupation
American introduced Hollywood and the beauty pageant. The first beauty pageant in the Philippines was the Manila Carnival.
When Gemma Cruz won in Miss International and Gloria Diaz won in Miss Universe
When Gemma Cruz won Miss International many Filipinos got obsessed with the idea of pageantry. When Gloria Diaz won we started to be a huge fan of Miss Universe than other pageants.
Philippines has a huge fan base and naturally a fanatic
Philippines has a huge fan base even if you’re not a fan of pageantry you will know who won the pageant because your neighbor will talk about it loudly or you will read it on the news pages in social media. Filipinos are naturally fanatic especially if it’s popular. They also have a huge fan base of Kpop, Kdramas, Thai films, Thai series, hollywood, basketball, boxing and Filipino artists. In the Philippines usual trends are Kpop and everything they like. Filipinos are also known for being most active on social media, so it will be easy for them to support their idols.
There’s nothing wrong for being a fanatic in pageantry however we need to support others that can give us in return. If we support other sports too then the government will be forced to support them well. We know that all Filipinos want to be recognized for being great in sports too, not just pageantry. We know that many want to collect gold medals, not just crowns. If we support some sports the same with pageantry, it will help those athlet to push themselves to win and give pride for Filipinos. Not just support them when they won but support them before they won.
