Doctor Who - Blockchain Game review
Doctor Who - Worlds Apart is the first attempt of BBC to enter the NFT and blockchain gaming world. The Game, a digital trading card game similar to HearthStone, Magic the Gathering, God's Unchained and others will be based on the homonymous British science fiction TV programming running since 1963.
According to the Game's website there will be;
Eight card categories and a total of 200 different card characters
Creatures (the main damage dealers of the game)
Companions (similar to creatures, based on notable series characters)
Upgrades (equipped to creatures & companions)
Moments (ability card that changes can alter the course of a battle)
Flash (played during opponent's turn, looks like some kind of defence / response mechanism)
Object (playable cards placed on board, have effects but can't attack or block attacks)
Phenomenon (similar to objects but with more unique abilities)
Planet (changes the board when you are playing, creates synergies with cards)
Frames
Frames are what denotes value in the game. Thus, scarcity is dictated by how unique a frame is and how much traders will be willing to pay for it. On a positive note, frames and not cards/characters denote value making it more of an equal field in the game where someone with standard frame cards can fight someone with unique collection frame cards without a disadvantage. Currently, there are 5 core frames with unlimited supply; Standard, Bronze, Silver, Gold, Black Diamond.
During the Game's pre-sale limited edition frames will be available for players to purchase. These types of frames will be available only once which will increase their scarcity and demand from traders.
Thoughts
As in other card games, the cards are divided by type, rarity, life form of the creature, abilities, attack power & health, and cost in order for players to devise their strategies accordingly. In total each deck will allow for up to 40 cards that can levelled up by gaining XP through battling opponents. What I see as innovative is that because in the original series, Doctor Who would travel with his spaceship Tardis, in different worlds in the past, present, and future, these elements will affect your and your opponents gameplay. So, we should expect the planet in which you are battling and time (past/future) will play an important role in game mechanics.
Public Game Beta Launch is expected in Q4 2021
Pros
BBC is UK's public service broadcaster and one of the most reputable news and entertainment companies globally.
Well balanced as frame rarity does not affect card dynamics and gameplay.
Interesting concept based on a series many of us know and love
NFT Tokenization, thus you own your cards which you can trade and sale in the marketplace ( expected to go live the following months)
Free game tokens that can be converted for card packs through daily logins
Cons
Limited series card packs and collections can be a bit expensive for some players.
Founders tokens quite expensive and limited in number
