Term"state":
The term "state " is originated from ancient Greek and Asian Romans.
In ancient Greek, the word "polis" was used to mean political organized community. The word "polis" reappears in city-states and city communities, which later evolved into English as "politics ".
While, in Asian Romans word "civitas" was used, which later evolved into English as "civics "," civilization", and " citizen".
The term "state ", came into use during the 15th-16th century in Italy.
Later all the countries started using the word "state".
According to Harold J.Laski;
A state is a territorial society divided into government and subjects claiming with it allotted physical area, supremacy over all other institutions.
Now if we look at the above definition, four things make up a complete state.
The four are;
• Population
• Territory
• Government
• Sovereignty
The population and territory are the physical basis of the state, while government and sovereignty are the political basis of the state. These four things combine to form a complete state, without any one of these four, we cannot even consider it as the state.
