Get to know Instant Gratification and Delayed Gratification in Today's Teenagers
The development of social media is growing rapidly. Given the current role of technology is very attached to human life, which initially only sent news via correspondence, now we can give each other news to anyone, anytime and anywhere easily using social media as an intermediary.
As we know, at this time there is an application that is popular among teenagers, namely an application called Tiktok. Tiktok is a Chinese social network and music video platform launched in September 2016 by Zhang Yiming, the founder of Toutiao. The application provides facilities for users to be able to create their own music video creations.
Popular applications like this certainly have positive and negative impacts. Where the existence of these negative content can indirectly harm the mental development of users, moreover the average social media user in Indonesia itself is a teenager who is still under 18 years old who is not yet stable in his stance or thoughts.
Adolescence is a period of development that will be passed by every individual. While the period of adolescent development is the period in which an individual reaches maturity both mentally, emotionally, socially, and physically, it is also a period of individual development during the transition from childhood to adulthood.
This results in differences in characteristics between one another. Changes that occur both physically and psychologically as well as social life, will certainly bring various problems and challenges.
One of the phenomena that occurs among teenagers today is where there are many cases of teenagers experiencing depression and even ending their lives due to the mental and emotional stress they experience, one of which comes from verbal attacks by social media users or commonly referred to as netizens. Why does this happen? This can be seen from one of Walter Mischel's theories which explains about delayed gratification and instant gratification.
Delayed gratification is the ability to refrain from getting rewards or satisfactions that should be obtained now in order to get something bigger later
In the 1960s, Walter Mischel, a professor from Stanford University conducted a series of important studies on the fulfillment of satisfaction. In this study, Mischel took hundreds of children aged 4-5 years into a room one by one. In the room, Mischel put a marshmallow on the table and made a deal with the boy.
If the child does not eat the marshmallow while he is away, then Mischel will give another marshmallow as a gift. The result is as expected, only a small number of children are able to refrain from eating the marshmallow.
The research did not stop there, further research on these children was carried out when they entered adolescence revealing interesting facts. Children who are able to refrain from eating marshmallows have higher scores, lower obesity tendencies, and have better social skills.
Several decades later, further research was conducted again. The results are also more interesting. It turned out that the children who were able to refrain from eating marshmallows were more successful than the other children.
Then what is the relationship between this theory and the phenomenon of today's youth? Yes, of course this is closely related to the behavior of today's teenagers who are very impatient, all of which want to be achieved instantly regardless of the path they take, whether in the right way or the wrong way.
This is what is called instant gratification, where everything you want is practically obtained. As is the case with most users of the Tiktok application, they do not think carefully about the side effects that will be experienced when uploading something on the application.
As long as they can be famous quickly by only appearing cute, funny, even controversial without any really good talent or skills, they are willing to do it all for their own satisfaction.
In fact, it is very dangerous for them. Like the case that happened to one of the booming Tiktokers named Batsy Smokes, a woman who made a controversial video about racism, which resulted in her being bullied all over by social media users throughout Indonesia, traumatizing her and deactivating her Tiktok account.
As we know, adolescence is a period of transition from children to adults, in this case there is development both physically and mentally. Adolescence is supposed to be used to train an individual emotionally and mentally so that it leads to positive things, but instead it becomes a pressure which in the end will endanger himself as a result of the instant gratification.
This is one of the reasons why teenagers in modern times are very susceptible to mental illness, one of which is depression. This is also the reason why it is important for an individual to master delayed gratification, the goal is that the individual can enjoy and appreciate the process of being able to develop and become a strong person and can think clearly and be more mature in making a decision.
