World history refers to the development of planet Earth from its inception to the present day. Almost all branches of environmental science contribute to the understanding of key events of the Earth's past. The age of the Earth is approximately one-third of the age of the universe. An immense amount of geological changes took place over that period, accompanied by the emergence of life and its subsequent evolution.
The Earth was formed around 4.54 billion years ago by accretion from the solar nebula. Volcanic outgassing probably created primordial skies and then the ocean; but the air contains almost no oxygen and can therefore be toxic to most modern lives including humans. Most of the Earth is dissolved due to frequent collisions with other bodies that have led to intense volcanism. A "giant spike" collision with a planet-sized body was thought to have been responsible for the formation on the Moon. Over time, the Earth cooled down, causing the formation of a solid crust, and allowing liquid water to surface.
