Often I think about the path that I am on and how I actually ended up where I am. Ultimately I have come to the place to realize that I can talk about The Power of Decisions in 10 Minutes.
What is a Decision?
What is a decision? When you think about it, a decision is actually a specific point in time. Many think that decisions take time and consume amazing amounts of attention.
When in reality the amount of time behind any decision only takes a moment. A blip. Even a blink of an eye a decision is made. I submit that the deliberation is what takes up most of the bandwidth overall.
So what are the decisions which consume our daily lives.
What shall I have for dinner?
When should I retire for the evening?
How will I spend my time during the day?
All valid questions that do require a decision. But that's not all of it.
The Periphery
In addition to any decision that is made, a large amount of potential exists on the periphery. What effects will be realized and what should be prepared for?
Potentially this is the other area where the decision is often confused with the periphery, which includes the consequences, outcomes or feedback.
All are completely valid, yet they are not the actual decision. One could even argue they are irrelevant to the decision altogether.
Have you ever noticed that? You intend to decide on a particular topic yet, when it comes down to it, you move in a different direction because you have deviated from your original intent?
The periphery has influenced your position to an extent where you decided something quite different than if you were more deliberate or intent about your direction.
We Are Near the End
Here is another phrase that may sound familiar. Know the destination but discover the journey. You can use this analogy in many different arenas, but driving seems like a great example to use here.
If you would like to drive from coast to coast in the United States, the total distance is several thousand miles depending on your origin and destination. It would be quite challenging albeit impossible to have knowledge of every single decision that will be made along the way.
Will you swerve in traffic? Will you avoid turbulent weather, or is there some other interim destination that you would like to rest or take a quick stop at?
All of those smaller decisions are part of the journey. Far too often we are wrapped up in the destination. Savor the journey and enjoy the ride. (10 minutes 22 seconds)
