Parenting for the unique task

Parenting or mentoring children to become responsible adults isn’t a child’s play. You have to specially prepare yourself for the task, and deploy the right strategies to succeed.

Firstly, you need to acquire the needed skills, experience and virtues you want to pass on to the kids yourself. Remember, you can’t teach your personal hygiene, for instance if you yourself don’t observe personal hygiene because you can give what you don’t have. Also there is no how you can lead them God if you have not yet visited Calvary.

A mentor or trainer reproduces himself in his trainee; that is, he passes onto them the virtues, skills, knowledge, and knowledge, and experience he has acquired himself. You need what it takes to mentor or train your children.

Secondly, do well to be patient with the children. Remember, Rome wasn’t built in a day. A little girl or boy can’t imbibe in a minute, hours, or even days what took your months and years to acquire. You have to be patient with them. Continue to teach them to do the same thing. Be persistence in your teaching even when they still continue to make mistakes, which is normal. Sooner or later, they we learn. Avoid taking over the task you have assigned impatiently just because they failed to perform up to your expectation.

Thirdly, effective communication is very essential. Make use of the best language that they understand to put across a message to them. By “best language” I am not saying spanking and disciplining them, but adopting the best method of making them to understand what you are saying or what you want them to do.

Children are said to be imitators; therefore, the best method of making them to learn something is to encourage them to parrot back the information you have just given to them or to do what you did right before them.
