Faggot, are you saying? Okay, so that title might seem rather offensive at worst and clickbait at best, but this article is about the popular British dish known as faggots, not a homosexual's rather offensive American English slur. I'm pleased we've cleared that up!

What is a faggot?

Faggots are a sort of meat ball/meatloaf dish that originated in the 1700s in the United Kingdom. It uses conventional offcuts and offal to make meatballs available, usually with pork, but with beef and other varieties.

In the south-west of England and southern Wales, it is very common. Faggots are inexplicably called ducks in Yorkshire and Lincolnshire. Again, we only talk about food, not about gays.

Why has this been invented?

One of those popular poor people's foods is the faggot. The main idea is to eat anything from head to tail, and to waste none. These marigolds were especially common during periods of rationing.

You can also see butchers cooking up their own versions of the faggot in the UK.

What's there in a name?

The name obviously attracts sniggers and I can remember it causing a lot of hilarity as a child, such as amusingly saying that "faggots" were your classmates' favorite food. It was a don't judge for the 80s. It is not known how it got the word, although it truly has no connection to the use derived from American English. "That being said, Sommerfields British supermarket got in trouble with a guy saying he "has nothing against faggots, I just don't fancy them. They've been fined.
