A Brief Bitcoin History Lesson - Satoshi Nakamoto Messages

A lot has been written about Satoshi Nakamoto over the years.

  • Who was he?

  • Is he a CIA plot?

  • Why did he disappear?

  • Is he dead?

  • And more recently, did Satoshi move 40 BTC from his wallet to an unknown wallet?

But what did Satoshi Nakamoto write?

In the Beginning

The early messages from Satoshi Nakamoto tended to be Satoshi spreading the word amongst the Cypherpunk community.

In August of 2008, Satoshi sent two private emails to cypherpunks, Wei Dai  and Hal Finney, asking them for feedback on early versions of the Bitcoin white paper.

Later on the messages tend to be Satoshi answering questions from interested Cypherpunks or correcting their misunderstandings.

You need to bear in mind these messages were written to his peers in the Cypherpunk "movement". (Not to be confused with Cyberpunk).

But most of the early Cypherpunks failed to grasp the significance of the P2P e-cash paper. Some were just plain confused and didn't understand what Satoshi was presenting to their world. How ever there were a select few who thought it showed promise.

Early Cypherpunks

Hal Finney, an eager coder, ran the initial Bitcoin client and submitted bug reports. Hal was also the recipient of the first Bitcoin transaction.

Wei Dai created b-money, an anonymous, distributed electronic system. It was published on the Cypherpunks mailing list in November 1998.

Satoshi Nakamoto excerpts, musings and quotes

I have collected a small selection of some of the more interesting and notable Satoshi Nakamoto excerpts, musings and quotes from his emails.

The topics covered ranging from Dying Bitcoins, Privacy, Collectible to The Porn Guys.

Some may even be prophetic.

2008 November 13. Bitcoin P2P e-cash paper.

I wonder who Satoshi is having a dig at with their "libertarian viewpoint'.

2008 November 17. Bitcoin P2P e-cash paper.

Napster was founded in 1999 as a pioneering peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing internet software that emphasized sharing digital audio files, typically audio songs, encoded in MP3 format. As the software became popular, the company ran into legal difficulties over copyright infringement.

2009 January 17. Bitcoin P2P e-cash paper.

Well that one sort of came true.

2009 February 15. Bitcoin open source implementation of P2P currency.

It is slowly becoming obvious to more people, except maybe the Harry Potter lady.

2009 November 25. Re: Repost: How anonymous are bitcoins?

This is still sound advice.

2010 February 14. Re: What's with this odd generation?

We will know the answer to that one in another 10 years time.

2010 February 14. Re: What's with this odd generation?

Well thats the theory anyway, only time will tell how that one plays out.

2010 February 26. Re: New icon/logo.

I think we can live with that.

2010 June 21. Re: Dying bitcoins

It is estimated that approximately 4 million Bitcoin are lost.

2010 July 05. Re: Slashdot Submission for 1.0

This is still true today. The Bitcoin community tried and failed to explain what is Bitcoin to the Harry Potter lady.

2010 Aug 27. Re: Bitcoins are most like shares of common stock

That explains why I like collecting sats (aka stacking sats), because it is really just a collectible.

2010 September 23. Re: Porn

And buying drugs on the Silk Road.

2010 December 11. Re: PC World Article on Bitcoin

Julian Assange was a well-known cypherpunk and hornet's nest kicker, who advocated the use of cryptography to ensure privacy on the Internet.

The End

Bitcoin, a decentralised, a non-trust-based system of e-currency. Thank you Satoshi.

Well, the more I know. But hey, his words did get into a sense that everyone is now having it. I can also see where the "Small blocks high fees" mindset came from if looked at a certain angle.

"Tribute to Satoshi Nakamoto for its inventing skills to have invented the greatest invention of our generation- Bitcoin". We are on read.cash to earn BCH, an offspring of BTC, so we need to praise the brain behind the creation of BCH.

According to Gavin Andresen, BCH is what he was working on when he was lead developer for the Bitcoin Core Project.
